This section outlines useful resources, programs and business development opportunities for the Melbourne visitor industry.

Australian Tourism Accreditation Program

The Australian Tourism Accreditation Program (ATAP) helps businesses address the key elements covered in the development of a solid business plan and customises the framework specifically for tourism operators.

Find out more about how to get accredited.

About the Program

The ATAP program encourages businesses to:

  • Plan how their business will function, and;
  • Check that customer expectations are being met.

In turn, Accreditation will provide clients and industry colleagues with an assurance that participating businesses are committed to professionalism both in business operations and delivery of service.

Tourism Accreditation:

  • Adds value to your business
  • Recognises quality of management and involves a documentation process of your company's policies and procedures
  • Creates a consistently high level of customer service and product delivery
  • Increases your online distribution and brand awareness through an Australian Tourism Data Warehouse listing (for eligible WA operators only)

The ATAP program will:

Provide you with information which will help you prepare a marketing and business plan.

  • Help you identify the appropriate licences you require and where to get them
  • Identify Government regulations that may impact on your business
  • Assist you in managing all aspects of your business
  • Identify where you can get the latest information and assistance

The organisation is spearheading a cohesive, new approach to marketing Melbourne and Victoria to attract more visitors and world-class events to the state and consolidate Melbourne and Victoria's position as a leading global tourism and events destination.

Visit Victoria is committed to working in partnership with government, regional tourism organisations, industry and commercial partners to achieve the collective goals of delivering a distinctive, world-class visitor experience and growing the state's $21 billion tourism and events industry.

Visit Victoria commenced operation as a company limited by guarantee on 1 July 2016. Its establishment followed a comprehensive review of Victoria's visitor economy commissioned by the Victorian Government in March 2015 that recommended a unified governance and institutional arrangement to maximise the economic benefits of Victoria's visitor economy.

The Tourism Events and Visitor Economy (TEVE) branch within the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources is responsible for providing policy, strategy, governance support and industry development advice to all portfolio entities including Visit Victoria and to Government and industry on the visitor economy.
